The Early Career Framework

All newly qualified teachers (ECTs) in England are required to complete a two-year Induction period based on the DfE's Early Career Framework. (ECF)

There are three approaches that schools can select from for ECF-based training:

  1. A provider-led programme (see more information about our offer below)
  2. Use DfE-accredited materials to deliver ECF-based training themselves
  3. Design and deliver their own training programme based on the ECF

Whichever route a school chooses, they must adhere to the statutory induction guidance. As part of this, ECTs must:

  • Receive a 10% timetable reduction in their first year of induction and a 5% timetable reduction in their second year
  • Be allocated a mentor to support them throughout their induction period

If you have any questions about the above routes, please email centrallondontsh@centrallondontsh.org.uk

The Early Career Teachers Programme

Central London Teaching School Hub delivers fully-funded provider-led option in partnership with Ambition Institute.

ECTs are supported in this programme through:

  • A comprehensive curriculum of online self-study to support their development in key areas of behaviour, instruction and subject
  • Face-to-face conferences or twilights (sessions which take place in the afternoon or early evening) in the local area delivered through our partnership schools. This is a great opportunity for ECTs to network with others in similar contexts and phases
  • Coaching by a dedicated subject mentor within their school, who in turn receive dedicated training and support as part of the mentor curriculum

Funding

The provider-led programme is fully-funded for the following establishments:

  • state-funded schools, colleges, sixth forms, children’s centres and nurseries
  • maintained and non-maintained special schools
  • independent schools that receive Section 41 funding

The DfE will also pay funding directly to schools for the time ECTs and mentors need to attend training sessions and mentoring sessions. More information about the amount of funding available can be found here on DfE website.

Schools backfill payments to cover 36 hours of mentor time off timetable for training per mentor, over 2 years. Year 1 and year 2 refer respectively to the first year and second year of induction for a mentor.

Appropriate Body Registration

As outlined in the statutory induction guidance, all ECTs must be registered with an Appropriate Body in order to formally commence their Induction period. Appropriate Bodies ensure that ECTs are receiving their entitlements, and Induction Tutors are expected to report on ECT progress at the end of each term throughout the two-year Induction period. From September 2023, local authorities are no longer able to register new ECTs with their service, as Teaching School Hubs are expected to fullfill this role. There is an at-cost fee for this service - more information about our service and how to register can be found here.
